Green

What I love about Austin is that you can almost taste creativity and innovation in the air. Equally fun–to share that energy with girls ages 6 – 9 while supporting them in growing as leaders, innovators, productive community members and guardians of the earth.

Today we took our Green Girls course participants on the road with a visit to the Bullock State Texas History Museum’s Texas Music Roadtrip for fun and inspiration. On the list–be alert to ideas for a group musical invention using wind energy and repurposed wind chimes that we’ll create. At the museum the girls saw how Clifton Chenier took the washboard instrument up another level, punched out notes and composed their own music with musicbox paper (in pic) and chanced upon a high school robotics group on the third floor refining their projects who gave them a turn at the controls.

How this experience shaped their group project ideas? Here goes:

  • Take apart old wind chimes
  • Use a stylized tree form in design inspired by Mr. Ritter’s tree in the museum’s floor mosaic
  • Add bells, as well as wind chimes
  • Consider an indoor and outdoor option for display
  • Exhibit the work in a museum!
Nice work, if you can get it!

What’s the Deal?: What the girls know is that we’re having fun and helping the environment. What parents know is that we’re practicing leadership, innovation in science and art, teamwork and communication skills. This session’s focus: Wind Energy. We’ll visit two professional offices and a remodeled home that all have green features, plus make our own projects.
