Homework

We work with a range of clients on a continuum of school experiences–public, private, homeschool–some involving homework, some not. Recently, we’ve been receiving requests for help in managing the homework process.

In our home, we witness the miracle of a 10-year-old who gets a snack, followed by careful focus until she completes her work. For her, all she needs is a big snack, including some protein and she’s ready. Miracle, really. Most kids don’t settle in this easily.

In past years, during stretches of academic challenges, she needed to take mini breaks outside after small chunks of time with homework. This year, to divide the time, she does the bulk of the homework after school, except for the reading, which she does as part of her bedtime routine.

Once in awhile, when a new concept challenges her, we make the abstract idea real with objects she loves or by linking the concept to something she’s already proficient doing.

For example, last week some large numerals with decimal points swirled around in her head until we recalled price tags of doll clothes that she’s saving for that together cost under $20.00. After the real connection, she understood where to put the decimal point with larger numerals and how to check if her answer was reasonable by estimating.

Another child we work with gains momentum for the process by working with stones, real objects that he loves. This picture shows an example of connecting math work in adding, estimating, decimal points and subtracting with the stones placed right on the paper to make the math clear and meaningful. While setting up real experiences seems like extra parent work, the process is a shortcut to understanding for the child.

Still another child and mother improved their homework routine by taking trampoline breaks in between sections to keep the energy flowing. They managed time by setting a  timer or counting jumps.

You know your child–lots of breaks may not work for some kids. Others may need a guaranteed outside time first before beginning homework.

What’s the Deal?: Don’t be discouraged. Working through homework challenges is multifaceted, so there may be a couple of factors at play. You have the degree of homework difficulty, your schedule, temperament of your child and siblings, plus  other factors to consider.

  • Is there anything else that younger siblings need to be calm during homework time?

  • Does your child need a movement break during the homework time, or before?
  • Does the child need help understanding the assignment?
