Stumble

“This thing we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down.”

–Mary Pickford

Last night, the clock on the stove read 12:27 a.m. when the first real chance to post a blog yesterday happened. Shoot! My goal with this blog was to do 40 consecutive days. After a great start, I ran into roadblocks. The weekly divorce work on Sundays took extra energy, gearing up emotionally and collecting the gear for our daughter’s transition between households. An ugly looking spider bite (only allergies, no brown recluse) sent us to urgent care this weekend, among other challenges.

However, I felt a strange peace with the stumbling this time. Angel investor Esther Dyson says, “Always make new mistakes.”

When I reflected upon missing my self-imposed deadline, I told myself, Atta girl, these are new mistakes.  New mistakes meaning:

  • I dared to start the blog to challenge for my brain and build business
  • I asked for help to meet this challenge
  • I took care of my children’s unique needs this weekend
  • I cared for myself…and most importantly,
  • I didn’t feel guilty, bad, or even uneasy

I stumbled in meeting my goal, so what? I’ve completed other 40 day challenges before; I will just get up and begin again. No big deal.

And maybe, just maybe, someone else can benefit from the peace I’ve found with this stumble.

WHAT’S THE DEAL?: We can’t truly grow unless we’re willing to stumble and admit shortcomings. In the 80’s, a view that a woman could “have it all” dominated the work culture. In my experience, we can’t have it all, at the same time, without serious costs for ourselves and our families. And in the end, the peace that matters is the peace that we give ourselves through compassion with our failures, plus the peace found in the resilience we develop by getting back up. If we want compassionate, resilient children, we can give that compassion to ourselves and get back in the game. Our children are watching our responses to failures, you can count on it.
